Singing In The Sun: Women’s Event

Hi Everyone,

I hope you enjoyed your weekend.  We had this weekend off and I loved the rainy Saturday at home.  This is quite different than last weekend.  We were at Singing In the Sun and it was hectic as usual.  If you missed it, I want to encourage you to make plans for Gatlinburg in September.  They are sister events and, in my opinion, there is nothing else like them.

This year at Singing in the Sun, a new event was added on Friday morning.  We had a morning conference just for women!  Candy Pfiefer did a wonderful job of organizing the event.  You never really know what to expect at a first time event, but about 500 ladies came out that morning and they were charged up.

Candy opened up the event by introducing all the participants; Ivan Parker, TaRanda Greene, Lauren Talley, and Mary Jane Carter were the featured soloists.  Candy, Susan Whisnant, and I all spoke.  We all came on stage to open up the morning with praise choruses.  Ivan then sang and everyone loved it.  He really did a great job of setting the tone for the service.  TaRanda Greene, one of the greatest voices in gospel music, sang next and captured everyone’s heart with a song she and her daughter, Isabella, did together.  TaRanda also shared a testimony and then continued to lead in worship.  I don’t think there was dry eye in the house.  Susan was introduced next and just before she stood up, she looked at me and said, “God has just changed everything I was going to say, what do you think?”  I said, “well, you have to do it then.”  She stood and shared her testimony of how God brought her through some voice issues and healed her from a vocal cord cyst.  She ended with a song from their newest CD and it was a powerful moment.  Lauren sang next and did a great job continuing in the flow of the service.  She then introduced me and I spoke and shared some of my testimony about following God’s voice and knowing what your purpose is in life.  Mary Jane and Candy ended the service with more praise and Candy, who is a gifted Bible teacher, challenged us to know who we are in Christ and how powerful we, as women, can be for Christ.

I can’t begin to tell you how many comments we received from the ladies and even a couple of the men, (yes, a few men sneaked in) telling us it was one of the best events they had been to and they would like to do it again.  If you were there, thank you for taking your time to come. Tell us what you thought of the event and if it had impact on your life.

Also, Lauren and I are in the planning stages of some women’s events and would like to know your thoughts.  What topics would be of interest to you, would you be interested in a day event or possibly a two-day event.  What is important to you at this type of event?  We will be doing the same event as Singing In the Sun in Gatlinburg in September, so make your plans to come.

Let us know what you think.

Wow! I am so, so excited to think that you and Lauren might be doing this type of ministry for us. I’m still basking in the afterglow of the ladies’ meeting on Friday morning! Thank you for your (and all the ladies’ — and even Ivan’s) obedience in doing this. As for subjects, I love the personal testimonies and stories of other women across the country that you have encountered who’ve shared their stories and found ways to “get through”. I’d love to do a Bible study, but that’s a little hard to do in only a day or two. I’d love a 2-day meeting, but one day would work also. Perhaps expanding on Candy’s introduction of who we are in Christ would be a good topic. Thanks again and I look forward to more of the same!
Love you ladies and all the groups who are proclaiming Christ through their songs and their lives.

Personal testimonies are great encouragement to others going through similar circumstances. I also like to hear good teachings on everyday living. Reminders of how to live a holy life in an evil world. How to be thankful and forgiving without compromising the word of God to condone sin? I love all of you ladies and Ivan. That’s one of the events I would’ve wanted to attend if I had been at the Singing in the Sun this year. We need the word of truth… God Bless.

    Hi Debra,
About a year ago I attended a woman’s retreat in Concord N.C. My first time ever attending at all. I was simply blown away by the coming together of women from different walks of life to learn, praise and worship our Lord and Savior.
The message, music and fellowship and how His love was present was so AWESOME ! I loved it so much I didn’t want it to end .
Most of all , was the message brought to us. No matter what message you bring that message will mean something to everyone in many ways. Everyone will sure to take something in.
I am truly excited, that you and Lauren are getting this together. It’s about time for a revival.

Just listened to the new LaFontaines CD and noticed that Roger had a hand in producing the project as well as playing the keyboard. We have followed this families amazing talent for years and think that this is one of the best CD’s they have put out! I’m certain the “Talley touch” helped. Way to go Roger!

You think you had a hectic week-end. What about Britney Spears? She freaked out after a fan rushed the stage. I would freak out, too. I hope she’ll revisit her southern gospel roots for her next album by attending a Christian Lady Retreat. It would be an amazing experience. Perhaps, Connie can donate her a wig or two.

I was just talking to Roger about a booking and he directed me to the Tree-O site to get some info. What a way God has in directing our thoughts and prayers and keeping us on track. I read your May 4th comments, Debra, and wanted to say “AMEN” to all you wrote. I was blessed to have been at the SITS women’s meeting, and dare say it was probably the highlight of the week. I can’t wait until the Gatlinburg weekend. The song Susan Whisnant sang that morning speaks to me daily to help me remember my sisters in Christ. “I’ll pray for you, you pray for me and together we’ll touch Heaven on our knees.” Candy Pfiefer was also such a blessing, she just charged my battery!!! And Mary Jane, to be able to bless people and know how genuine she is, what a voice.
Taranda Greene, what can you say…God bless her little pea-pickin’ voice, if she could only sing!
Then my favorites, Debra and Lauren, what a blessing, what talents, and what a witness you are.
I love you both. So Don’t Miss Gatlinburg – Labor Day Weekend. It will be full of the best of Gospel Events.

Lauren, in your newsletter you were shocked to be the Female Vocalist Of The Year, we are not shocked or surprised at all. The TREE fans know, YOU ARE THE BEST ! :) You always give it all that you’ve got ! THE ONE you are praising – KNOWS YOU, LOVES YOU, CARES ABOUT YOU. I hope this will encourage you and your Mom in the next women’s conference. :)

WOW! I’m still basking in the afterglow of the conference for women at Singing in the Sun. What a time of worship and praise there was with all of you women (and Ivan). In fact, I would have liked to bottle it so I could share it at the inspirational tea Rachel and I have for women at the Mississippi State Quartet Convention. It was worth every mile of the 720 miles John and I drove to get to Myrtle Beach. There was just something very special about each and every one that participated. I do believe it was a hit, and I will look forward to hearing more about the conferences you and Lauren are planning for the future. I pray that the response you have had is an encouragement to you.

What’s up Talley Trio!!! I just wanted to tell ya something kinda cute. You remember my daughter Paige….well, she is 2 yrs old and totally loves you guys. the reason I say that is because the other day we put the “Stages” cd in while traveling and I’ll be if that kid sang every song. Well, every song in her two year old way. but she really gets into God is Great and That’s enough. She sings the Broken Ones really cute. She actually has sang that with me at church, but I didnt know she knew all of those other songs. In fact when the music started Paige just simply said…”Lauren”!!!!

Just proves that kids are sponges they take in everything.

I am so thinkin ya’ll need to come back to Columbus,Indiana!

    Much love

In honor of your Anniversary, and Roger’s Birthday, coming up later this month, I have compiled two poems, I hope you like them. I wasn’t sure where to put them. I thought it would be appropriate in Moments.

    Roger and Debra,

You love someone because they sing a song, only you can hear.

God gave you two a special love to share,
Because He knew how much you would cherish it.
Love brought you together as husband and wife,
And gave each of you a best friend for life.

God has blessed us through your ministry,
All the good things you do, the many miles you travel,
The places you go, the people you see,
Your family has made a positive difference in me.

Your music washes away from my soul, the dust of everyday life, and gives me hope in Jesus Christ.

You are authentic, dedicated, and always encouraging.

    Thank You Roger and Debra.

    Happy Anniversary :)

    Roger,

The music you produce is pure delight,
And makes our days both happy and bright.
Count your life by smiles, not tears,
Count your age by friends, not years.

Your quality of work takes real dedication,
You tweak and tweak until it is near perfection.
The finished product always has a mission,
    To fulfill Christ’s Great Commission.

You have assisted many artists to achieve their full potential, by your encouragement, creativity, and imagination. Your diligence in handling details for auditory and visual excellence has become ( in my opinion ) The Standard, not only in Southern Gospel, but in the entire spectrum of Christian Music.

Unshared joy is an unlighted candle. You share your music with us, thus lighting our candles, then we light others, and on and on it goes until we are all singing the same song, and it all started with you. It is amazing what a little spark of joy can do, and all it really takes is a willing heart and tender touch by a person like you.

    Thank You Roger.

    Happy Birthday :)
