In the Studio: Vocal Session

Here is footage from a vocal session. They’re working on three songs here, “Good Things,” “God Bless America,” and “Someone Had to Die.”

In the Studio: I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (Song 11)

The last day of tracking wrapped up with this song. Lauren was out of the studio typing up words to the song and came back just in time—as the players were starting to record the track, shortly before the vocal started!

Normally, if I roll a couple of takes on the song introduction, I just use whichever one turned out best. But the outtakes on this one were funny enough that I asked Roger if it was okay to include them!

In the Studio: He is With You (Song 10)

Lauren takes a turn at the microphone, introducing another story song, “He is With You.”

Sometimes, in the studio, especially when there’s a team that has worked together often enough to build a rapport, serious efforts on working out an arrangement can get sidetracked. Here, pianist Jason Webb and guitarist Jeremy Medkiff (whom we also know around here as Brother Marion) get creative—and get Lauren excited!

In the Studio: God Lives There (Song 9)

Debra introduces a relaxed, thought-provoking story song (penned by Kenna Turner West), “God Lives There,” and sings one of the verses.

In the Studio: Hands of Grace (Song 8)

After Roger’s introduction of the song, watch drummer Tony Creasman and guitarist Jeremy Medkiff (whom we also know around these parts as Brother Marion) warm up before the track is cut and Roger records a scratch (practice) vocal.
