Featuring Jim Whetsel

Good morning! I know you haven’t heard from me—at least on this site—since my NQC posts in September. But at NQC, knowing that they would be in my area in late October, I talked with Roger about the possibility of doing some videos at the concert.

I showed up last weekend not knowing what I’d film. When I got there, I heard that there had been a request for a video featuring Jim Whetsel, their sound engineer. Here you go:

And once the sound had been all set up, here was one of the highlights from the evening:

Hi Jim, I’m sure the Talleys appreciate you very much! I was at that concert in Shelby and when Lauren sang ” He’s Alive “, I got a chill down my spine listening to her sing, and knowing what that means to all of us. Thank you Jim for helping to spread the Good News.

The video doesn’t come close to capturing how spine chilling it was. The church – a Lutheran church, no less! – erupted into a spontaneous cheer as the chorus started!

    Hey guys,

Jim is a great guy. It’s not uncommon to see him talking about the Lord to a total stranger in a restaurant or a truck stop somewhere. He also is in charge of making bacon-egg-cheese sandwiches on the bus late at night. :)

As for “He’s Alive,” that song absolutely wears me out but I love singing it!

Poor Lauren seems like she’s been getting the brunt of the cool weather lately. She acted like she was freezing to death last time I saw the Trio in Myerstown. Glad to see you’re feeling better Lauren. You’re all troopers! Hey Roger, when are you going to let Jim do a post? He always has something to say when I talk to him. Hi Craig and everyone else,

We have been singin My Hope Is In The Lord every night for a few months now and it always gets a great response from the audience. We sang it at NQC on Thursday night and those folks seemed to really like it. We’ve started singin Mountain Mover after My Hope on most sets, and it seems like a perfect message to follow up with. We sang them last night at 1st Lutheran Church in Shelby OH, and the response was overwhelming. Many people were on their feet praising the Lord and they just kept clapping after Mountain Mover. I finally said “who knew the Lutherans like the rowdy songs” and everone laughed. We have a great evening and the church was packed. We took 2 or 3 video clips from the evening that will be posted in a few days. Be watching for some interesting footage! Have a great weekend. Go Vols :)

I’m definitely not a Lutheran, but I was there at the concert in Shelby, Ohio. The jokes were very funny. I think the pastor in that church are wakening them up…LOL Anyways, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, and can’t wait till we can see and hear you folks again. The singing as well as the piano playing just thrilled our souls, and we all got our blessers blessed. Having Jake singing with ya was neat too. Our prayers are with you all…and Lauren, I never knew about your affliction with the fatigue. You always appear so full of energy, and the love of the Lord shows through in shinning glory. Love and prayers to you all. Thank you so much.

Hey Jeff! Welcome to the Tree-O. Thank you for coming. For the rest of the Tree-O community, Jeff is the lead singer of the Bay City Quartet, which is a new local group based out of Annapolis Maryland. They shared the stage with the Talleys that night and did an outstanding job representing Maryland. If I could just get them all to wear a purple shirt and a Raven’s tie! Most people that follow Southern Gospel know that Maryland doesn’t have a huge amount of Southern Gospel promotion going on, but hopefully that will all change. I’m starting to see more groups emerging from the MD/PA area and more promotion going on, so we’re headed in the right direction. I’m looking forward to seeing the Bay City Guys rolling down the road in that Prevost some day! Hopefully there will be some more concerts down the road someday. It was a true blessing and a pleasure to be able to work with the Talleys and The Bay City Quartet. You’re all terrific people to work with. Thanks again everyone!

I’m all the way in Florida now but y’all are singing at my Grandma’s church tonight (Symrna/Robbins, NC) and I wish so badly I could be there. My family sang in that church many times, the last time being at my grandfather’s funeral. You may not know it but I have no doubt you sang to and reached people tonight who cannot bring themselves to even speak to each other anymore. (Possessions and money can do horrible things to families if allowed.) But God…But God no doubt used the Talleys once again to cross barriers, bridge gaps, and heal broken hearts. My heart goes out to my family up there and I am so grateful that y’all find time and realize the importance of going out to the sticks–and this place really is out there!—to bring the message you sing and live. I love you for it and pray you will continue to have strength and passion to do what you do in every part of the world for all families. (Including Charley, Angel, Dakota, and Dad who have now been added in my prayer.)

You are all so nice and patient with all the picture taking we had you to do! Thanks so much for all you do, for going out each week away from your home and singing the gospel!! We had a blessed night. May God continue to bless you as you serve!!

I am looking for a song title. The lines I think I remember are upbeat: God is good, God is great, God is merciful. . .

I heard this sung in Jackson in July–I didn’t get the name then either. I believe it was your group.

I would appreciate a response. Thanks.

What a family and what a great sound! Roger and Debra, what a blessing to have such a lovely and talented daughter, and most importantly she knows and loves the Lord! Every time I hear you sing, it brings such joy and especially listening to Lauren whose voice has such a rich timber and very resonate quality. I enjoy singing myself (basso profundo) and find myself amazed at how the Lord has placed so much talent in one family. Praise God for putting your talents to honoring the One who made it all possible.

hey guys, stopping by to say you all did great sat. night, and thank you lauren for taking a picture with me and signing your new cd. i also want to say everything my mom said to you was true( i was too nervous to speak, what can i say it was the first time i met u in person lol) you are an inspiration to me and you dont know how many times a day i turned to my ipod to listen to one of your songs just to cheer me up. but also as i have stated in previous posts, my grandfather was actually the one who introduced me to the talley trio (and any other southern gospel artist that have appeared on the gaither homecoming videos lol) . and saturday night was the only night i could make it to the nqc concert. this night also marked the 1 year anniversery of his death. and during this time last year i leaned on not only family and friends but also whatever talley trio music i had on my ipod. i struggled very hard with him being gone. so saying all this i want to say thank you for being a light for God and i will be forever grateful for what hes done for me through you.

    may god bless you,
    thank you,

Lauren, you and your parents belong to the church (First Baptist of Morristown) where our former pastor, Dean Haun, is Senior Pastor. We were members at his former church, First Baptist of Jonesboro, GA before moving to Charleston two years ago. I just stopped by to see the church on the way back from the Corvette 15th Anniversary celebration in Bowling Green, KY and took some pictures of the church’s exterior and then sent them to Brother Dean. When you see him, ask him what his nickname is for me. He will undoubtedly tell you “the man with the golden voice”! He was our best pastor and a great man of God.

    Blessings,

Dear Mrs. Debbie, Mr. Roger, and Lauren

I just wanted to thank you all personally for the wonderful worship service tonight at Mount Olive College.Thank you for allowing Free Spirit and the Praise Team to sing with you tonight. It was such a blessing to worship with all of you and sing for the glory of God. I grew up listening to all of your music, so it has been such a wonderful experience learning all these songs and singing them with all of you. I pray God will continue to bless your family greatly and continue to use your ministry to touch the lives of so many people as you have touched mine tonight. God bless you all and I hope to see you again soon! :-)

    Hey everyone,

We’re riding up the road from NC to Va Beach, Va. We are still trying to recover from NQC :) We had a great concert tonight in Mount Olive, NC.

Debra went to the doctor yesterday and was told she has pneumonia. She got shots and a couple of prescriptions filled and managed to get through the concert alright. Yesterday we had to take my mom to the hospital just before we left on this trip. She has some internal bleeding and they’re running tests trying to find the source of the problem. Please remember her and Debra in your prayers.

Thanks for being such a support group for us. It is a good feeling to know we have a group of friends like you lifting us up. We hope to see you soon.

I just heard the Talley Trio for the 1st time live this past Thursday night at Mount Olive College and I just thought they were amazing people and amazing singers. Lauren was talking and said something that I really needed to hear and I just want to say thank you Lauren.
She said that if you feel like the lord is calling you to do something for him or calling you into a type of ministry then go ahead and jump right into it as soon as you can, because God will bless you in ways you can’t imagine.

I am very very good and music. I play many different instruments by ear and by music and just love playing. However, I have been going through some really troubling times and have stopped playing gospel music for awhile now, and i used to play at several different church events and services. That is just how bad things got, but her words just spoke to me in a way that seemed like….It was God speaking….and I have made up my mind that I will serve the lord with my talent and try my hardest to follow his will. I even gave her Dad (Roger) my information. Anyways I just want to say thank you for serving the lord and letting him use you to minister. You have definitely made an impact on my life.
    God Bless,

Lauren, I have a question. Do you guys practice everyday ? ( Not that you need it ! ) It seems that God has a rule ( If you don’t use it, you loose it ).Professional athletes practice some aspect of their sport everyday. Members of a professional orchestra say they can tell immediately if they miss a day of practice because their versatility on their chosen instrument goes down quite rapidly. It is up to me to ponder these things ! ;)

    Thank You.

Hi I am looking so forward to seeing all of you for the first time in 6 days! My nieces & I have been texting the count down back & forth. When she text me ‘10 more days’ I just happen to have ♪That’s just the way the Father is♪ playing on the cd player. I sent her a text back stating I hoped Lauren is going to sing this one. So since they have seen you live before (I havent but I’ve been listening to you on Cd for the last 4 or 5 years) I’ve been told that Lauren does @ least one of her solo’s. My niece encouraged me to make my request. I decided I’ll just e my request… so, if you don’t happen to have a song picked out to sing in Connecticut this coming Saturday :) . Can you guess? ♪That’s just the way the Father is♪ would be a wonderful choice :)

    Hi Lauren,
I just wanted you all to know what a blessing you have been in my life. I have followed you for many years but have never had the privilege of meeting you in person. I’ve even sang a few of your songs. But thank you for your ministry and for keeping it real. So many groups out there today are in it for the “business” and not for the ministry. The Lord has placed a strong burden upon my heart in the last couple of months especially to pray for those out there in Southern Gospel and SG Radio that the Lord would annoint and use them because to many you are all they get. Times are getting hard and I know there are going to be obstacles in sharing the gospel but Thank the Lord for people like you all who can get out there and present it in such a way as to reach out to hurting people. This is a crucial time when people are crying out and just looking for some encouragement and someone to love them with a love that only God’s love can provide. Thank you. There are too many of your songs to name that have touched me but I can say that “The Broken Ones” right now has meant so much to me. I was married to a minister and 7 years ago, after 9 years of marriage he left and I have been alone ever since. It’s not until just this year that I made the decision that I would open my heart to another relationship, but there are times when the loneliness is sooo overwhelming that I just can’t stand it but thank the Lord, He always comes by! Most of the SG I get now is through CD’s as we don’t really have a radio station around here but I have many of your older ones and I’m so thankful! Thank you for keeping Jesus first in the middle of all the caos and busyness of this ministry. You all are a blessing and are in my prayers!

Thursday main stage appearance

During the Talley Trio’s Thursday night main stage apparance, they sang four songs.

They started with their new arrangement of “Amazong Grace” (from Songs You Know By Heart). Debra started the song, and Lauren had the last solo. Roger was featured on “My Hope is In the Lord.” Then Lauren closed with two songs, the Talleys classic “Mountain Mover” and another song new to the Talley Trio, “He’s Alive.”

I have been watching audience reactions closely this week, and it’s frankly hard for a song that many in the audience have never heard to get a standing ovation, but this one did.

I plan to post video from the Tree’s get-together some time this afternoon, so be watching for that!
