Getting It Right: Studio Vocal Work.

It takes many hours in the studio to get vocals just perfect for the recording of a particular song. Here, we show you some video clips of us working on “Thanks To Calvary And Amazing Grace.”  You won’t hear the whole song, just some parts we are working on. This is where we perfect and learn the song’s vocal arrangements. It is a tedious process but it makes for a great recording and prepares us to “get it right” for actual performances. Singing the song correctly has to become “second nature” for us so when we are singing for you in concert, we can focus on the Spirit rather than the details of singing.

Thanks for the glimpse of just how hard and tedious it is to record and get new songs down. This has been an exciting process of being part of this new recording by blogging and utube! Thank you for the opportunity! Can’t wait for the new CD to come out!! It will be great!

    Lauren,
Is it ever “strange” working with your parents? I love mine dearly, but I don’t think I could work with them and be with them all the time. Do you live at home with them?

Whatever you all do, the Lord is blessing your music and your ministry.

Yes I do still live at home (I can’t resist a good deal). We’re a pretty normal family and we do need time away from each other occasionally! Actually on our days at home we are usually going in three different directions and are involved in our own endeavors so we aren’t together ALL the time- although it seems that way sometimes!

We’ve always had a very close relationship, we dearly love each other and we’ve always been very thankful for this; we probably couldn’t do this if we didn’t. I think it’s very important to have a personal life and family time away from the music. Sometimes it’s hard to find a balance but it’s very important.

It is a LOT of hard work - but it DOES pay off in the end because soooooo many people are touched by the songs. One day you’ll be in heaven and someone will come up to any one of y’all and say “I never met you but one of your songs is part of the reason I’m here today” Now, when you think of it that way, all the hard work (and boring work - lol) seems like nothing at all, doesn’t it?

You guys are GREAT! Keep up the good work.

Lauren, I have a question. How come there are 2 stacked vocals of you??

    Reply to RJ Henderson
    1. Lauren Talley posted the following on July 25, 2008 at 11:24 pm.

Hey RJ! Good question. The answer is….

There won’t be 2 vocal passes on the finished product. I record two tracks of the entire verse and then in the mix, my dad (the producer) can pick and choose which lines or words he likes the best to come up with the best possible performance.

This is very common practice. In effect, what you hear on a CD many times is not one continuous performance by a singer, but a composite of many takes. Thanks for asking!

One more thing- (I misunderstood your original question)

For a song like “Calvary and Amazing Grace” we choose to stack the vocals once for a bigger, fuller sound. We chose not to stack every song, just the ones we felt needed it most. Solos are not stacked and many times the lead will not be stacked at all so that it won’t sound artificial. The stacks are mixed lower than the original vocals so it still will sound like three people and not six.

Do your vocal chords ever get tired, or do you ever get sore throat ? Do you take any precautions about saving your voices ? I’m serious. After thousands of concerts, and many many recordings, music must definitely be your life ! This is so interesting ! Thank You.

      Hi Jeff,

Of course we occasionally get sick like everyone else, but I very seldom experience vocal fatigue. Performing and recording as often as we do certainly helps our vocal stamina, but I’d attribute it to concentrating on proper vocal technique more than anything else. Learning to breathe correctly, place the voice properly and use volume correctly are some of the biggest essentials to taking care of your voice.

Of course resting and drinking water are important too, and we don’t do nearly enough of either one :)

Question: Will you be singing any of the new songs in your upcoming concerts, especially the one in Indiana next week (Aug. 9 and 10)? Great fit for a title RJ! Hey Debra! It was nice to talk to you and Lauren last Saturday. I really enjoyed the concert. I would have to say I think that was probably the first concert I’ve been to where there were cows outside of the seating area though. Hey if you know anyone that might be interested in a box I’ll probably have another one up for grabs in about a week provided nothing unforseen happens, like a major mess up or something, so I’ll be open to offers if it would appeal to anyone. Tell Lauren, Roger and Greg I said hi. Take care!

    Hi Talley’s,

Nice photos, but watch the angle of the camera - it’s better if the camera is at least as high as the eyes of the person(s) being photographed - keeps “not so nice” areas of the body from being highlighted.

Are your eyes going buggy yet from all of the suggestions???? Opinions are like grains of sand in numbers to vast to count (by anyone other than God).

Thanks for asking us our opinions and for allowing us to be part of this new album. I’m looking forward to the release!

I can see this choice is going to be a tuff one, there are so many different opinions. I zoomed in and zoomed out and changed my mind twice.
My final choices are group G-7, Lauren Tan-1, Debra Green-3, Roger Orange-2.

These are pretty good photos, and a hard choice.
Lauren you look like Hannah Montana in Tan-1,lol, ;) But Green-1 is the best shot I think; Deb, I’ll say Green-2; Roger, Purple-1; And for the group, to me it’s either G-8 or G-11. Take care and God Bless.

wow…wonderful pictures…the group would have to be G9…all of Lauren’s are good…but I especially like Green-1…Debra’s is Green-3…and Purple 1 for Roger…I like the idea with individual pictures for the cover…keep up the good work…

    Hey Guys,

All of the pics are very good.

I liked the ones with the green background the best. I thought the yellow background was a little to bright - I tended to notice the background in those more than I noticed you all. The green background made you stand out oh so nice :)
    Here are my choices:

    Group - G6
    Lauren - Green 1
    Debra - Green 2
    Roger - Green 1

Just for fun sometime, you might consider doing a group photo with an orange background in honor of the Lady Vols! - Gotta love ‘em!

    Have a wonderful day Guys!
    Your Friend,
    Heidi

Group photos G1 and G11 are good too, but Lauren’s feet look odd placed that far apart, maybe can be cropped.

I chose all photos with smiles because singing for the Lord has always put a smile on my face and I cant think of anything better to smile about!

    Group Shots:
    G5 (great album cover shot)
or G7 (great back cover, tray card, or back of booklet)
However, I must say that I love Roger’s “Captain America” pose on G10. :)
    Individual Pics:
Lauren - Orange 1 (I like the smiley green one, but the orange one is the “money shot”.)
    Debra - Green 1
    Roger - Purple 1

Great pics, y’all! But I wouldn’t expect any less from Kim L.! See you soon!

Great photos, you guys! I loved them all! It was hard to narrow down. But here is my list, complete with my reasoning behind my choices.

    Group Shots: G5 or G8
G5 - I love that y’all are laughing and look like you’re having a blast.
G8 - The angle is great and y’all have great smiles in this one.

Lauren Shots: Tan 1 or Green 2
Lauren-Tan-1 - The tan background looks fantastic with your hair color and skin tone.
    Lauren-Green-2 - Great eyes/smile in this one.

Debra Shots: Orange 3 or 4
Debra-Orange-3 - I love the orange background for her. It really compliments her red hair. This one makes her look classy and elegant.
Debra-Orange-4 - This one looks like she’s a little more free and having fun.

Roger Shots: Purple 1 or Orange 2
Roger-Purple-1 - This one seems a little edgy. I like it. It stands out.
Roger-Orange-2 - He has a great smile in this one.

Thanks for including us in this. May God continue to bless you all!

Here are my pics for potential photos.
